with direct rail connection from Kirkenes
to Nikel iN Murmansk oblast. |
| “Kirkenes
RailPort” is the cooperation project
with the aim of establishing the railways
connection from Kirkenes, Norway to the
Russian Railways network. Further, to
develop the Port of Kirkenes into a large
port for international shipping. The
cooperation efforts is initiated by the
Finnmark County Authority and the municipality
of Sør-Varanger. The purpose of
the RailPort project is to contribute
to turn the transportchain to the northerly
ports in Russia and Norway, establishing
an alternative to the heavy traficked
ports of the Baltic Sea and the Black
Sea. The distance from Kirkenes to the
86.000 km long Russian Railnetwork is
in the region of 40-45 kilometers! |
